Humbling Moment #425263748

In the 9th grade I had a crush on a girl named Sarah. She was a new to town and my friends and I sort of adopted her into our group. We started hanging out with her all the time, and she and I got to be pretty close. I remember one night we were all sitting on my friend Jessie’s stairs, talking about our families. I for some reason brought up parents who smoke pot. I, at age 14, had decided that I thought parents who smoked pot well into their children’s lives were incredibly selfish and irresponsible. I don’t think that now, but I did then. As soon as I voiced this opinion out loud, I felt a hard object make contact with the back of my head. It was Sarah’s Doc Marten, kicking me with the force of 1,000 embarrassed daughters with stoner fathers.

Later that year she and I were lying on our backs, drunk, on our friend Nate’s front lawn, looking up at the stars. During a perfect lull in the conversation, she glanced over at me and said, “You know, Dave, I could never make out with you. Your eyebrows are too big.”

Touche, Sarah. Touche.
