Listen I’m 35 now, I can look back on my writing and I can say this. This is something I’ve never really said before in public or admitted on the record, and I’ll admit it now: I didn’t realize this when I was writing it, but I think if you read between the lines a little bit, in between all the bravado, you can see a lot of self-loathing.

The Internet Is Important #352465347

Last night, some friends and I were drinking some beer and talking about movies. Naturally, I can’t talk about movies for very long without bringing up Michael Keaton, because to me, he’s the best. Then we consulted IMDB on what he’s been up to the last few years and saw that he appeared in a season 9 episode of Frasier in 2002 (sidenote: there were 265 episodes of Frasier produced. That is insane) as a con man. Naturally, I got loud about this and proclaimed that it must be amazing, and we should find it. My friend Matt was incredulous: No WAY were we going to find this obscure, late in it’s run episode of a sitcom that went off the air 6 years ago.

This lead me to soldier on to a rather painstakingly maintained Frasier fansite to get the episode name and number (Wheels of Fortune, Season 9, Episode 16), and then to Filestube for a search of rapidshare and megaupload files. There were THREE different uploaded files. THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE uploaded the Michael Keaton episode of Frasier. So we got one. HA! It worked! We told the blinky box what we wanted and we got it! And what we got, was a 2002 episode of a show I haven’t wanted to watch since I was MAYBE 13.

15 minutes later I was voluntarily (and even enthusiastically) watching Frasier. My enthusiasm for Michael Keaton is boundless and can’t even be stopped by my hatred for Kelsey Grammar. The episode was really weird, and didn’t even have a B plot. It had NOTHING to do with Frasier, and even less to do with Niles or Daphne. Instead, it was all about Fraiser’s ex-wife’s half brother, Blaine, played by Keaton. They spend a good 5 minutes describing his character before he enters. He’s a con man, a real scoundrel (Frasier’s word, not mine), and he’s swindled him and his family a million times. They REALLY take their time talking about all the horrible things he’s done, and then he enters, and he’s in a WHEELCHAIR! He was saved by Jesus and now he’s a man of god.

GASP! What follows is the most standard “Is he faking/is he not” con man story that culminates in a really awesome scene where Keaton delivers a sermon in an airport motel conference room. Then Frasier mucks it all up like an asshole and is like “he’s faking! He’s not really crippled!” And then, right out of The Big Lebowski, he throws Keaton out of his chair! I won’t tell you how it ends, in case you are one of the zero people who would ever download this episode. If you love Michael Keaton as much as I do, then you should watch it. If you don’t, and you also hate Kelsey Grammar (you you clearly do), please never spend your time doing this.

In conclusion, the internet will help you get closer to Michael Keaton. And really, isn’t that what matters?
